First 75 Years

Vero Beach began receiving its first settlers in the mid 1840s. The development of this area was boosted by the building of Florida’s East Coast Railroad, which started its service in 1893, and the development of Drainage Districts in 1905. Vero Beach began developing rapidly and was incorporated in 1919.

Silverton Airport

Vero Beach Airport was originally named Silverton Airport during the WW1.  Then in 1929, Bud Holman, whose sons and grandsons now operate Sun Aviation, was one of the group that developed the airport in Vero Beach.  The Vero Beach Regional Airport was dedicated in 1930 and in 1932 Eastern Air Lines began refueling there. In 1935 EAL started passenger and mail service from Vero Beach, continuing until about January 1973. By the end of the 1930s the airport got runway lights and radio and teletype machines; in 1939, using Public Assistance workers, the runways were extended and a year later the Civil Aviation Administration spent $250,000 on more improvements.

1891 Name Vero Beach

The modern history of Vero Beach, Florida begins with its establishment as a citrus shipping point. Henry T. Gifford started the first post office in the area in 1891 and used the name Vero. Most historians think he named it after his wife, Vero.  Vero means "truth".
